EN — I’m driving a Peugeot 206 and park in front of a restaurant. Heavy cones [like the ones used at garage entrances] fall onto the car. My uncle is around, and I tell him that here [in the U.S.] we need a police report, unlike in Turkey where we could just make our own. I add, “But I’m used to it; I can handle it myself with insurance, after renting a car for a few days”.
We go to his nearby house, where he’s waiting for a mysterious package from the police. He calls to ask the person delivering it if they can also bring a document about the car on the same day. As I’m seeing him off, we talk through a slightly open door; he tells me not to leave it ajar, to close it. I say, “Okay, let me know if you’ll have the lunch out, I’ll plan my day accordingly”. He replies with something I don’t fully understand.
I leave the house and find myself in a restaurant a bit larger than the roadside diners in Turkey. A girl I expect to take my order approaches and sits across from me, she’s hearing impaired. She flips through the menu, but I don’t understand sign language. Her older sister, a waitress, sits beside her. They’re casual people; the sister starts translating what the girl says. I spot Iskender on the menu and think, “Haven’t seen this in years while in the U.S.”, even though my meal has already been ordered, they place an order too. Suddenly, the deaf girl starts speaking out loud, but I still can’t understand her. She makes some sexual jokes, which I stop her from saying, telling her she’s too young for that.
Their backs face a TV showing a movie I’ve never seen. In the film, the girls’ [at the table with me] mother is deaf as well. She talks in sign language, explaining that she can’t adjust her dress properly, so the shoulders slip down, and warns the girls not to get distracted. During a dance scene where everyone sings along, her lips and movements don’t match the song since she can’t hear. I tell the girls I don’t know them and ask why they’re sitting at my table, suspecting they’re trying to make me pay the bill. A young man not at the same table as them is there as well, I sense he doesn’t have good intentions.
